The meal was just as chaotic as the prep work but Libby held her own throughout the day. She managed to get a few words in edge-wise even in the midst of Theo’s chatty aunts, she’d won the kids over when she taught them how to fold their cloth napkins into colorful sailor hats, and she’d even impressed Theo’s dad with her entrepreneurial spirit.

Theo held her breath when he asked – across the dinner table no less – what exactly Libby’s business was.

“I run a boutique adult store,” she said, then winked at Theo and added the mission statement they’d come up with together. “With a focus on female empowerment.”

“Oh,” Theo’s dad said, unpacking the words for a moment and finally deciding he approved. “That sounds nice, dear. Can someone pass me the mashed potatoes?”

Theo tried not to snicker and Libby leaned in to whisper to her. “Do you think he knows what I meant?”

“Let’s pray that he doesn’t.”

After the meal, everyone was full and happy, and a lot of the anticipatory energy that filled the cabin before had been spent. People found places to relax and digest, and Theo took Libby by the hand.

“Up for a little walk?”

“Sure, if it’s actually a little one,” Libby said, one hand on her belly. “I really shouldn’t have had that third helping of your aunt’s lemon chicken soup.”

“But she loves you like a daughter since you did.”

“Is that the way to your family’s hearts?” Libby asked. “Through my stomach?”

Theo laughed. “You could say that. But I’m pretty sure everybody already loves you so you don’t need to worry about that.”

The most beautiful blush came to Libby’s skin and Theo had to stop and kiss her right there in the living room. Not a single one of her family members noticed – they were all in a post-meal tryptophan haze.

“Come on.”

Theo took her outside, where the light was just beginning to go pink and orange in a beautiful mountain sunset. The cabin was nestled on the side of a hill with a spectacular view of the forest beyond, but Theo’s favorite thing was the little pond at the back of the property.

She led Libby on a slightly overgrown path around the side of the cabin and down a slight incline. Five minutes later, they were standing on a ten-foot-wide boulder overlooking the pond.

“We came out to the cabin a lot during the summers when I was a kid. I used to come out to this boulder all the time. It’s so peaceful,” she said as she pulled Libby down to sit. They let their legs dangle and Libby looked over. The drop was only about five feet to the surface of the water.

“How deep is it?” Libby asked. “Ever go diving?”

Theo shook her head. “Never felt like breaking my neck. It’s about waist-deep – Penny and I would get pool floats and spend whole afternoons just bobbing along on the water.”

“It’s beautiful,” Libby said. “The whole place is breathtaking.”

“As are you,” Theo said.

She laced her hands on either side of Libby’s neck and pulled her in for a kiss.
